Visual Novel Recommendation Thread
« on: 2016-12-28 15:23:34 »
So, I've been playing a few visual novels that I'd known about for a long time, but am looking to branch out. I'm currently playing ef - the first tale (on hold because I'm trying to get my hands on the Japanese version) and Rewrite. I'm not opposed to playing some other classics like the Key stuff, but I'm also looking for newer titles and titles for which there is no anime adaptation. H- or otherwise is fine as long as the story is good. So, what should I play next?

And yes, I know Fate/ is a thing... I will play some iteration of it eventually.

Srsly, just do Katawa Shoujo if you haven't yet. Even has the option to turn off h-scenes, most of which are pretty tame.

You're right. I think it's time I give this game a go.

To The Moon is a pretty decent English-language VN, available on Steam.  5-6 hours and feels.

Nice. Will add it to my wishlist.

This is pretty cool; I've wanted to get started with VNs but I haven't really known what to look for. I've heard that with Steins;Gate and some others the anime was better than the original VN, so I wasn't sure what was actually worth tracking down. I've also heard of some interesting indie American VN style-games that are being kickstarted, so I'll let you guys know if anything actually happens with that.

Here is the /vg recommendation chart I mentioned in club yesterday. Looks like a pretty good starting point if you're looking to get into visual novels.

Thanks for posting the recs list; there's a weekend sale on Steam so I'm looking up some of these. Some other titles I've heard recommended but never played: Amnesia, Dandelion & Nameless (by Cheritz, who made Mystic Messenger) and Hakuoki.

I will say I dropped the Amnesia anime adaptation like a hot rock, but maybe it was just a bad adaptation.

Noted; sometimes that happens. I bought the game in the steam sale so I'll report back later.

Edit: I also bought Eden*, Planetarian, and Hatoful girlfriend. I'm really slow to get through games so that should last me a while.

Hey, so there's a humble bundle going on right now for most of Sekai Project's titles. Check it out!
