Guide: Auto-updating MAL Signature Banners
« on: 2017-03-05 16:29:09 »
You may have noticed my MAL banner signature, and wondered how to create your own. The processes of configuring one is fairly straightforward, but betting it to auto-refresh is trickier, so I thought I'd make a guide detailing how I accomplished this.

First, go to this page on MAL:

There, you can setup how you want your signature banner to look. You can also upload your own background image. That must have a height of 105px, and can have a width of up to 600px.

You can now hit save and copy the embed code at the top of that page it will look something like this:

Code: [Select]
In order to make it automatically refresh like mine, though, you will need to add a random string after the image filename like this (after the .png):

Code: [Select]
You can use the same number as I did, or a random long string of numbers of your own. This essentially generates a new URL each time the image is called which forces the browser to re-download the image when the page is refreshed and not cache it. I'm sure XT or someone else can explain in more detail exactly what is going on, but I can confirm that it works for me. Anyway, just copy that modified code into your signature field and you should be good.
