New Game! Appreciation Thread
« on: 2016-09-06 23:57:33 »
I think New Game! is easily one of the most rateable workplace anime I've ever seen, on top of being great in general. So in honor of that, I've started this thread to spam some of my favorite moments from the show as it nears its final episode.

Can we also take a second to appreciate episode 10's introduction to Hifumi's imagined "mean version" of Aoba? It is now and forever the definitive best version; no take-backs.

IKR? it's great. And it's not just me... there's an officially-licensed hug pillow of it now.

But yeah, probably the best workplace anime I've ever seen. Highly recommend.

Here's a cool article examining how realistic New Game's depiction of the Japanese video game industry is. Spoilers: actually it's pretty realistic.

Also, that last episode gave me so many feels... I want a kouhai like Aoba some day ;__;

Thanks for posting that article. It's cool that the show is so realistic, except for a few glossed-over areas (like how they're all cute girls and everyone's nice to each other T-T ) It makes me want to work in the Japanese game industry! Maybe I can translate a game someday...

They also announced an advanced-screening of the first episode at an event on June 17th, where there will also be a live performance by forfolium, who are once again doing the show's OP. Not translating all of the details because I doubt any of you are going :P

I'm personally really interested in seeing how they handle the foreign character Christiana Yamato (likely a returnee or half-Japanese woman given her name, but her listing "Japanese [language]" as a skill indicates she may not be fully bilingual), because I just took the 4th-Year Japanese Workplace course and I have thoughtsâ„¢ about foreigners working in Japan. Given that New Game has been pretty realistic and grounded in terms of its depiction of the workplace (obvious comedic exaggerations aside; see the article linked a few posts above), I am optimistic.

I will likely return to this subject once the show starts airing, so keep an eye out for that if you are interested.

Nice! I can't wait to see how the new characters settle in to the mix.

I'm really interested in the "foreign worker" aspect myself; they also listed "skinship" (i.e. platonic naked companionship in bathhouses, etc.) as something she's bad at, so they do seem to be going for a "foreign character" vibe here. In other anime (Love Live! for example) they portray half-Japanese characters by having a Japanese VA do a "foreign"-sounding accent and peppering their speech with words from their second language (English, German, etc.) which makes a great Idol gimmick but isn't actually all that realistic. It would probably be too much to ask for them to hire a foreign VA, but I would like to see something a bit more realistic in terms of speech and maybe even some common workplace challenges. Either way, I'll be looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

P.S. I probably would've romanized "Hochiduki" as "zuki" or "dzuki" because I think that would encourage the closest correct pronunciation in English readers (since づ isn't really a sound we have in English) but "du" probably is the most technically correct.
